Choaspes spp - - Awlking spp.

Subspecies in India

Four species of Choaspes occur in India: (1) Choaspes benjaminii (Guérin-Méneville, 1843) – Common Awlking, (2) Choaspes furcata Evans, 1932 – Hooked Awlking, (3) Choaspes stigmata Evans, 1932 – Branded Awlking, and (4) Choaspes xanthopogon (Kollar, [1844]) – Spiny Awlking. They cannot be easily identified from the images of undersides alone taken in nature. This page hosts such images with uncertain identification. These species are, however, easy to distinguish based on larval colouration, and the male genitalia. So you can easily identify these species if you raise the caterpillars (visit the links above for individual species pages and for images of distinctive larval colouration). If you are a research scientist or a serious butterfly-watcher, you could also collect representative specimens and dissect the male genitalia to confirm identifications, which add substantially to the available information.
