Arhopala belphoebe - White-ringed Oakblue

Not yet known.

The two images (BOI media codes av753 and av755) published on this website on 27 April 2014 represent only the second record of this species from India. Previously only one specimen was known from "Assam" (Evans 1957), and the well-known distribution of this species was from Dawei (=Tavoy) in S. Myanmar southward to Malay Peninsula (Evans 1957; Corbet, Pendlebury and Eliot 1992). The records from Pakke Tiger Reserve validate the occurence of this species in India and also extend the range of this species across a major biogeographic barrier (the Brahmaputra River), and therefore are significant.

This is a very rare species throughout its range, and especially in India. The two images (BOI media codes av753 and av755) on this website taken in the Pakke Tiger Reserve in western Arunachal Pradesh represent only the second record of this species from India. The two individuals were seen 30 minutes apart around noon in a forest patch at the edge of an unnamed stream near the Bhalukpong Ghat Anti Poaching Camp within Pakke Tiger Reserve on 23 April 2014. The individuals stayed low in the undergrowth, and displayed a weak, fluttering flight typical of the smaller, tailless oakblues. SS has surveyed butterflies in the same area in May 2009, October 2010, March 2011 and September 2011, but had no previous sightings of this species.
